The day of the public release has arrived. Within this day, everyone will have access to what we've done in Mote so far.
We'd like to take this opportunity, while running our last minute tests, to let people know about what to expect.
Thank you.
We'd like to take this opportunity, while running our last minute tests, to let people know about what to expect.
- First, we think it is important to address something we only found out recently. There seems to be an expectation that Mote has achieved all of it's project goals, particularly the ones regarding the new UI, and map system. Sorry to disappoint you, folks, we are not there yet. We have only achieved Phase 1, as dictated by the amount of support we got during the 1st Kickstarter. This means Mote still looks a lot like MapTool, but this is something that will rapidly change in the coming months.
- You don't need to maintain a Java installation. We will do that for you. Even if you have Java 6 or 8 in your PC, Mote will ignore these in favor of it's dedicated JVM.
- With that being said, the usual permissions regarding firewalls, AV programs, and the like, still need to be addressed by you, if they arise.
- Mote expects an environment that can at least run under 512MB to 1024MB. The old standard of 256MB, does not hold up anymore, and this was true even in MapTool.
- There will be bugs. Even with all the help from active participants of the closed beta, it was insufficient to get Mote out to the public bug-free. We are confident, however, that we are in the 90%-95%+ range as of the time of release, and with everyone's help, we are sure to get to a 100% in short time.
- We aim for a 100% backward compatibility to existing frameworks and scripts. We've achieved a high mark for this during the closed beta, but this can only be truly tested on this public release. So, if your framework or scripts do not work, please bear with us while we work toward resolution.
- You might have to make some changes to your existing macro script, particularly if you use html entities as stand-ins for Unicode, and utilize regular expressions.
- Unlike in MapTool, you will not find a list of remote sessions, or games, to connect to. You will have to rely on making a direct connection. The service that maintains a list of remote sessions belongs to RPTools. Idle Ideas will have service of its own. More on this on later posts.
- You also will not find the links to download image resources contributed to MapTool, for obvious reasons. These were licensed to RPTools specifically for use in MapTool. In time, we will provide our own resource links.
- We are in the process of clearing out the closed beta tracker to prepare for public reports. For people who want to report an issue, we will provide the information for the new tracker as soon as the host makes it available.
- We don't have a permanent forum. The reasons for this is detailed on posts accompanying the public release. For now, please channel questions to our G+ community.
Thank you.
